The purpose of the trial program conducted at the Annual Flower Trial Garden is to evaluate the performance of different annual plant cultivars under our unique Rocky Mountain environmental conditions. Our growing conditions are characterized by high altitude, intense solar radiation, drying winds, severe hailstorms, large fluctuations between day and night temperatures and a season-long need for irrigation. Each year, our annual trial consists of over 1,000 different cultivars of annual bedding plants. Varieties are grouped by genus, arranged by color and grown in rows, side-by-side, so as to facilitate the comparison of similar varieties. I had an active role in the gardens from September 2020 to December 2023.
The first week of august entails 250+ individuals coming to evaluate all 1,000+ trial plants
Greenhouse Production: watering and cultural care
Second Evaluation; Greenhouse: Organization, Watering and always some Enjoyment
Garden Cleanup: Forgotten steps when planting, and fall trial installs, pre-fall trial cleanups,
Transplants and Transitions into the ground
Evaluation Day: Largest planned event of our summer
Work beyond the Gardens: Started consulting and freelancing
Volunteer Relations that Last: Organized tour for previous volunteers to visit Tagawa Greenhouse Enterprise, and still run into people to this day!
During my final semester in 2023, David, Dr. Miller, a handful of students, volunteers and myself planted ~8,000 bulbs for a showcase the following spring. It involved David and I coring out hundreds and hundreds of holes, and filling with Tulips, Daffodils, and Muscari. Needless to say, I am a member of the Tulip Fan Club.
